Baptism

“…..and this water symbolises baptism that now saves you also- not the removal of dirt from the body but the pledge of a clear conscience toward God. It saves you by the resurrection of Jesus Christ.”

1 Peter 3:21

Baptism is the first holy sacrament followed by: Eucharist (First Holy Communion), Confirmation, Reconciliation, Anointing of the sick, Marriage and Holy Order. Baptism, comes from the Greek word baptizein meaning to "plunge" or "immerse"; the"plunge" into water symbolises the catechumen's burial into Christ's death, from which he rises up by resurrection with him. In the Catholic Church, infants are baptised as early as possible to welcome or initiate them into the Catholic faith and to free them from the original sin they were born with.

Those wishing to be baptised or have their child baptised at Our Lady of the Rosary should please contact the Parish Priest to make their intentions known. Baptisms normally take place on the 3rd Saturday of every month at 12 noon.

What to know

In order for a baby to be baptised, at least one Parent needs to be a Catholic, and to reside in the Parish. If you do not live in the Our Lady of the Rosary parish, you would need to have the permission of your own Parish Priest first.

Older children or adults who have already been baptised in another Christian church, are initiated into the Catholic Church through the Sacrament of Confirmation. If it is your desire to become Catholic please discuss with Fr Innocent . For adults, there is more information under ‘Becoming a Catholic.

Choosing Godparents

Godparents are sponsors who are there to help the baptised live a good Christian life and fulfil their baptismal promise. This is an important choice and should be carried out with a lot of thought and care. A godparent must be a Catholic above the age of sixteen, and a person who lives a life of faith that befits the role.
